Days ago, the results of TEM-4 (2019) were released, saying that School of Foreign Languages English and English for Education Majors of Grade 2017 create satisfactory results, and that there is a substantial increase in total passing rate, good and excellent rate and excellent rate compared with the results of previous years. The one-time pass rate of the whole grade reaches 86.25% (88.46% for English majors and 82.14% for English for Education majors), nearly 34 points higher than the national average pass rate (52.69%); the total excellent rate reaches 61.25% (63.46% for English majors and 57.14% for English for Education majors); and the excellent rate reaches 17.5% (15.38% for English majors and 21.43% for English for Education majors). Among them, two students majoring in English for Education have scored 90 and 91 points respectively.
The TEM-4 is a national English proficiency examination, which is sponsored by the Steering Committee for English Majors in Colleges and Universities under the Ministry of Education. The candidates for the exam are mainly grade two students majoring in English. The purpose of the examination is to comprehensively check whether the students who have completed TEM-4 courses have met the requirements of the syllabus, to assess the students’ basic skills in English and their mastery of grammatical structure and lexical usage, and in meanwhile to evaluate the teaching quality of English majors in colleges and universities.
The excellent results of this year in TEM are derived from the joint efforts of all faculty members and students in the English Department and the English for Education Department. Since the admission of Grade 17, the two departments have conscientiously implemented the teaching philosophy of “fine, precise, and meticulous” under the unified deployment of the teaching administration of the School of Foreign Languages. They have gradually increased the difficulty and quantity of the courses and exercises, constantly improved the teaching methods and means of basic courses, and actively created the “Gold Course” of the English-related majors. In order to improve the students’ level of MET-4, the two departments cooperate closely with the Clinic for Foreign Language Learning to trace the learning development of students and the prominent problems of theirs by means of multiple tests, such as entrance test, stage test and final test at the basic stage. At the same time, in view of the common learning problems of students, the two departments have continuously strived to consolidate students’ basic English skills through “Professional Basic Skills Training Camps” (listening, speaking, reading and writing camps), and tracking students’ learning situation online and offline. The excellent results of TEM-4 highlight the high quality of English majors in JSU, and also the positive influence of the English disciplinary development on the education of English-related majors.
