On September 25, the “Five-Pine” Forum, sponsored by the Publicity Department of the Party Committee and undertaken by the School of Foreign Languages, was held in A303. Professor Chen Xin of the School of Foreign Languages made a lecture in English entitled “Critical thinking and academic innovation - my views on Tsien Hsueshen’s question”. The lecture was presided over by School of Foreign Languages Party Committee member Zhu Wen. More than 100 graduate and undergraduate students of the School of Foreign Languages listened to the lecture.
To quote Lu Jiuyuan of the Song dynasty, “The greatest obstacle to learning is no doubt, it is doubt that promotes the learning.” It is an important task of institutions of higher learning in China to cultivate critical thinking. The critical quality of thinking plays a decisive role in creative activities and the creative thinking process. As a vital tool of academic inquiry, speculative ability has become one of the core objectives of all teaching activities of higher education. In the lecture, Ms. Chen focused on innovation, analyzing the connotation of critical thinking ability in academic innovation activities, and the thinking quality and cognitive skills that constitute the core of critical thinking ability. She also analyzed the development trend and existing problems of critical thinking of college students, elaborating the core skills and methods of critical thinking that might be employed by college students to carry out academic research. The students were enthused by the lecture. Their attentiveness and questions combined to light up the atmosphere of the lecture.
The successful holding of this lecture gave students a clearer understanding of the importance of critical thinking in academic innovation and the basic methods of integrating critical thinking into academic activities. Students said that they had benefited a lot from this lecture.
