On the afternoon of September 6, Wang Fengzhen, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, gave a lecture entitled “How to cultivate scientific research ability and interest - based on my own academic career” in the Third Lecture Hall of the Conference Center. The lecture was presided over by School of Foreign Languages Deputy Dean & Foreign Languages and Literatures Discipline Leader Professor Su Jianhong. Nearly 150 faculty member and students from the School of Foreign Languages and the School of Liberal Arts listened to the lecture.
Mr. Wang Fengzhen's lecture consists of five parts: First, why I choose to study literature; second, on the translation of Pearl S. Buck’s The Earth and her other works; third, my turn to critical theory and cultural research; fourth, the significance of learning theory, and how to learn and apply theory; fifth, my views on paper writing. In the lecture, Mr. Wang Fengzhen made an account of his own experiences in a simple but genial manner. He was never at a loss for the word, impressing the audience deeply with his rigorous scholarship and profound knowledge.
Wang Fengzhen, a research fellow at the CASS, was graduated from the Department of Western Languages and Literatures, Peking University in 1966. He is the former executive director of the International American Studies Association, China Association for the Study of American Literature and China Association for the Study of British Literature. He was a visiting scholar of the Institute of Critical Theory at the UCI, the Center for Humanistic Studies at the ANU, and the Center for Critical Theory at the Duke University, successively. He has been engaged in critical theory and cultural studies for many years. He studied and taught in the United States, Canada and Australia several times. He has published eight monographs and more than 10 translations, edited the “Intellectual Library” series (41 published) and The Collected Works of Frederic Jameson (14 volumes). He has published two kinds of articles in North America.
This lecture will not only benefit all the teachers and students, but also help to promote the academic research of the School of Foreign Languages.
