At 7:00 on the evening of April 5, the School of Foreign Languages held the online opening ceremony for the first group of micro major students of “International Argumentation” via “Tencent Conference”. School of Foreign Languages Deputy Dean Wu Peng, other teachers of the core courses, and all students of the first session participated in the opening ceremony.
At the opening ceremony, Deputy Dean Wu Peng first extended congratulations to the first group of students elected into the micro major. Then he expounded the mission and significance of the major, putting forward requirements for the students and hoping that they would raise their critical discussion capability via learning courses, apply the acquired knowledge of pragma-dialectics to their future work, learning and life, and command the skills for effective communication with others. Afterwards, the lecturers of the micro major each gave a brief introduction to his or her course and requirements and wishes for the students.
The Micro Major of “International Argumentation” is one of the first 11 micro majors approved by the University. It is jointly developed, devised and implemented by the Center for International Language Courses and the ILIAS at Jiangsu University. It is aimed at helping students discover and understand the argumentative phenomena of all kinds in daily and international communication, grasp the basic theory for pragma-dialectics and knowledge of intercultural communication, command the methods and skills for argumentative communication in the international context, and engage in argumentative writing and speaking in fluent English. The core courses include Argumentation Theory, Argumentative Analysis and Evaluation, Argumentative Writing, English Argumentation, Academic Public Speaking, and Intercultural Communication. These courses may perfectly dock with the core courses offered by the Department of Verbal Communication, Argumentation Theory and Rhetoric of the University of Amsterdam in teaching notion, content and methodology. All faculty members are qualified teachers that have received systematic training in the Netherlands.
