Days ago, the project team of “China University Evaluation” at the Chinese Academy of Management Science released the “2018 China University Rankings.” The English and Japanese Majors under the discipline of Foreign Languages and Literatures of the School of Foreign Languages, Jiangsu University are both rated as Grade A majors, coming out respectively 45th in China (among the total 647 schools) and 29th in China (among the total 344 schools), whose rankings are significantly higher than before. Their rankings are also near the top as compared with those of other majors of the University, enjoying obvious advantages as compared with those of foreign language majors in other universities of Jiangsu province.
Since the inception of the “13th Five-Year Plan”, the Department of English and the Department of Japanese housed by the School of Foreign Languages have taken serious, concrete and positive measures to tamp their foundations, raise the level of teaching quality, promote the construction of core and featured courses, strengthen their teaching faculties, make the best of excellent international teaching resources and form a dynamic and mutually complementary cultivation mechanism for excellent foreign language talents by following the major construction objectives formulated by the School for the new era and adhering to the principle of “integrating classroom teaching with extra-curricular/overseas development and the applied language ability with the critical thinking ability and intercultural communication skills.” In the meanwhile, the two departments have also greatly enhanced the teaching and research capabilities of their faculties through various channels and means, instructed the advantaged teaching teams and featured research teams to help each other, and prompted the faculty members to reflect on their teaching practice, promote their teaching abilities and teaching research abilities through carrying out various forms of teaching and research activities.
The significant increase in the rankings of the English and Japanese Majors indicates that the School’s professional development strategy of the “13th Five-year Plan” has achieved results, thus laying a good foundation for deepening reforms and implementing goals in future, and pointing out the orientation for the key tasks for professional construction.
