November 10-12, the 2017 Annual Meeting cum Symposium of Jiangsu Association of Foreign Literature Studies & the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Writer’s Association of Jiangsu Province was held in Jiangsu University of Technology at Changzhou. Director Professor of Jiangsu Association of Foreign Literature Studies & JSU School of Foreign Languages Professor Wu Qinghong attended the meeting together with two of her postgraduates, namely Jin Jing and Xue Yu.
The theme of this symposium is “studies on foreign literary classics”. It embraces 130 participants mainly from colleges and universities in Jiangsu province, including Renmin University of China, Nanjing University, Soochow University and Nanjing Normal University. The participants carried out profound discussions on the paradigm shift of and new trends in studies on foreign literary classics, the relationship between poetry and drama and visual art, traumatic memory and gender studies, and space narrative and postcolonial studies. Their discussion touched upon both foreign literary theories and writers and works.
The papers submitted to the symposium by Professor Wu Qinghong and her student Jin Jing are respectively titled “Pearl S. Buck’s Portraits of People in Indian Colonial Society--A Post-colonial Interpretation of Come, My Beloved” and “The English metaphorical construction of eastern and western elements in The Joy Luck Club and the E-C translation of these metaphors”. Professor Wu Qinghong chaired the discussions at the 3rd parallel session and delivered a summary speech at the general meeting.
